Actually, more aggressive traders were probably snapping up issues with large short interest, and you are correct that they outperformed investors in boring stocks such as Costco. Rapid movements of 100%+ in small caps with thin floats are not unusual.

This is a horrible market climate for short-sellers. I think it will continue to be for the forseeable future. It must be frustrating to watch something like HEB or CCSI trade up with no positive news. That doesn't mean I would buy these stocks (I don't gamble or daytrade, and I never buy worthless companies based on stock momentum.)
