and this to: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- UNITED KINGDOM - Data recorder for Nimrod MR.2 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The UK Royal Air Force (RAF) Nimrod MRA.4 upgrade programme is in its early days - while equipment on board the current in-service Nimrod MR.2s continues to be upgraded. The latest item is an order for DCRsi 75 digital cartridge recorders from Ampex Great Britain, by Normalair Garrett Ltd (NGL), The latter will integrate the system as part of an airborne data collection system on the aircraft. NGL will develop the data control and mechanical interfaces which allow the use of a standard DCRsi 75 digital recorder fitted into the current aircraft racks. Ideally, this should be accomplished without modification to existing aircraft systems. To do so, a large number of multi-channel analogue and digital sensor inputs must be multiplexed into a parallel digital format prior to recording. The electronics circuitry to perform this task will be fitted into two custom cards slots within the DCRsi 75 recorder. According to Ampex, the sonar and related data collected during flight, recorded at 75 megabits/ sec, can be analysed within an hour of returning to base, via a ground electronics system also being developed by NGL. First systems will be evaluated by personnel at RAF Kinloss this year. (Copyright 1998)
