Well, Sam, I think we are alike in a couple of ways.
"I think I can, I think I can", the motto of The Little Engine That Could, is one of my very favorite things from early childhood, and made a huge impression on me. When I look back on events in my life, and the events in lives around me, much of the difference in outcomes is sheer perseverance, just the will to keep trying and trying and not giving up.
The other survival mechanism that we share is a sense of humor. Sometimes everything is so grim that a dour person would just turn inside out and blow away like a big old sour lemon rind, things look so bad. But I guess I have a fine appreciation of gallows humor, because, like you, I have ended up making a joke and laughing out loud. I mean, sometimes there's nothing left to lose, and laughter itself feels really healing. Who was that famous person who became quite ill and nursed himself well by exposure to a lot of humor? I think that is very, very wise. |
