Microsoft makes money selling software. Most people buy software from Microsoft when they buy a new computer. Most people buy a new computer when their old one is too "slow".

Microsoft helps speed this process by releasing new word processors, spreadsheets, etc. that save files in formats that cannot be read with older versions of the same package. Users are then stuck with software they bought from Microsoft that no longer works with currently available Microsoft software. Upgrades are necessary to remain productive. The upgrades run slow on this "old" machine. Tech. support quickly fades away for the old software. The "fix" is to buy the latest version. People upgrade their computer about every three years. How often are we seeing "new" OS's and application bundles from Microsoft?

If you needed the new software to make yourself more productive, then fine. But that's usually not the way it happens. A web browser is the only new "gotta have it" software that has come along in recent years.

I can't believe how many times I've bought a word processor from Microsoft. And I still use it just to write letters and reports. Imagine that.
