I usually dread having to show up for a jury summons. But the
last time, I got over my grumpiness when a blind woman with
a guide dog came into the jury assembly room. She declined
to be excused becaue of her disablility, and when the first panel
was selected, her number followed mine and we were seated
next to each other in the courtroom. A little extra space was
allotted for her dog, a yellow Labrador retriever. She told me
all about her dog and her full-time job as a telephone operator,
and she seemed as excited as Penni about her jury duty.

Needless to say, it was an unusually uplifting day for me.
