Nokia supplies High Capacity mobile switching to StarHub, Singapore

(November 6, 1998) - Nokia and StarHub Pte have signed an agreement for the supply of a total integrated fixed and mobile solution to StarHub, Singapore. Part of the deal includes the delivery of Nokia's revolutionary High Capacity Mobile Switching Centre.

Nokia will be supplying its High Capacity DX 200 Mobile Switching Centre (MSCi) for StarHub's GSM 1800 network. The switches launched two weeks ago - as part of the Nokia High Capacity GSM System - offer the market's highest capacities.

The DX 200 "i-series" products will bring significant savings for network operators, reducing required site size by up to 60 per cent and offering up to a 70 per cent power saving thanks to a new compact design. The DX 200 "i-series" Mobile Switching Centre (MSCi) more than doubles existing capacity from 150,000 to 400,000 subscribers.

Operators can also fully use sophisticated features, such as Intelligent Network (IN)-based services, as Nokia's switches can
operate at maximum capacity even if all the calls in the network require an IN service.

Nokia will be providing fixed and mobile services for StarHub, using a common integrated DX 200 switching platform together with Intelligent Network capabilities. Nokia will also supply a full turnkey GSM 1800 network for StarHub.

StarHub is a joint venture between ST Telemedia, Singapore Power, Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp. and British Telecommunications. It was recently awarded both licenses to operate fixed and mobile communications services in Singapore. Commercial services for both licenses are due to commence on April 1, 2000. StarHub intends to build a world-class, state-of-the-art integrated broadband info-communications network with leading edge technologies and flexible platforms. It will be principally fibre-based and will be capable of providing high speed digital capabilities to deliver innovative voice, data, mobility and multimedia services.

Nokia is the world's leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile and fixed telecom networks including related
customer services. Nokia also supplies solutions and products for fixed and wireless datacom, as well as multimedia terminals and computer monitors. In 1997, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion (USD 9.8 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on five European Stock Exchanges and on the New York Stock Exchange (NOK.A), has sales in 130 countries and employs more than 42,000 people world-wide.
