I've been tracking the download times of cable modems and ADSL for some time now to detect service latency. There is a site you might want to visit to analyze the speeds of cable and some other forms of access. It is not a complete analysis but does show how variable the download speeds are for a 6 MB file. calnet30-26.gtecablemodem.com
