D.C. Area Code Split

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Bell Atlantic today announced that the District of Columbia will be getting a new area code. The splitting of the present (215) area code has become a neccessity due to a number shortage. Effective January 1, 1999 the western half of D.C., which includes the White House, will be using the new (666) area code.

White House spokesman Joe Lockhart told BNN, "The President is not amused by the new (666) area code. He claims that the change is the result of a vast right-wing religious conspiracy."

A spokesman for the local Our Lady of Perpetual Incontinence Baptist Church told BNN, "We had nothing to do with Bell Atlantic's decision to change the White House's area code. However, we stand by that old saying, "If the shoe fits..."
