Steve,
>>I know that I have made 90% of my money in programming life from Windows, so for me the choice is obvious.<<
Nothing wrong with that. Other folks have made their bread and butter on other platforms. So be it.
IMO, languages and OSs are going to be changing in many more ways that we can imagine. IBM just bought out SCO. I think SCO is big on PC UNIX systems. I don't know how legit IBM's strategy is, but it's a big move on their part and they will probably pump lot of $$ into beefing up UNIX, since NT definitely is vulnerable in certain areas.
IMO, LINUX is going to be MSFT's biggest competitor. Not because I'm in love with LINUX, but the concept of open-source software can be pretty powerful. I suspect MSFT will somehow overcome it, but it will be fun to watch and hopefully it will improve OS technology across the board.
One thing though. The speed of changes in technology are coming faster and faster, and it's nuts to try to think anyone has a hold on it. That's partly why I think this MSFT court trial is BS. Nobody, no matter how big, has ownership of standards anymore. There's shmoes like us can sit in our garage and come up with better mouse traps. But, this is also hi-techs strength. As long as we see it for what it is, then us as investor just want to know which train at the station is in use. I'll shift technologies in an instant once I see future visibile changes. Tech to me is a tool, it's not a way of life. It's just something to make my life easier....which countless folks miss.
Felt like ranting off the top of my head, so who knows if it's anything meaningful<G>.
