ahhaha, I know of Silk Road, and recently read the specs, that is long distance backbone DWDM for transmitting data. It is not any faster to any extent than current technology, nor does it solve the problems of simplifying networks or managing bandwidth effectively. The most effective use of bandwidth is from HLIT,ANTC and possibly GIC. You are reusing each wavelength effectively, thus eliminating the need for switches and routers. You are targetting certain wavelengths from the headend for broadcast, and some for internet and narrowcast. Silk Road is not only telling me nothing new about DWDM,but it has no unique capability. It is a nothing technology from what I can see,and there are other technologies like that I have read recently. It also has to get widespread acceptance by the telco's to get anywhere, that one seems dead in the water to me. The move is to MetroDWDM,and eventually to LanDWDM. And the reason HLIT is dead,is because the leader of fiber optics CIEN is dead. Markets are recursive calls to meanings inside meanings, the fiber optic group is dead, look at AFCI. And on to HLIT,they had record revenues, blew away even my wildest hopes for top line growth,USA sales up over 50%! The problem is Asia and Canada, and getting people overseas to buy any telecom equipment. Overseas sales used to be 60% of HLIT's sales, now under 40% and dropping. What hurt HLIT is what helped them in 1996,worlwide acceptance of their products. What is helping ATHM is also a recursive call to a higher meaning, the leader of the ISP's,AOL is screaming, and taking the others with it into the stratosphere, look at Mindless Spring, and Earthless Link.
