Thanks for the charts. I guess it's a terminology thing.

I found the reference where I picked up what I've been thinking of as the MACD histogram. It's in Dr. Elder's "Trading for a Living", where he describes MACD-histogram as MACD line - Signal line , displayed as a histogram. Displaying it that way turns the signal line crosses into moves above and below the zero line.

I don't know if this usage of the term is standard or not.
