Indulge me while I make a dumb comment on INTC.

Background: I have a p166 at home and a pii250 at work. I can't really tell the difference. I also have win95 with 4.0 explorer desktop at work and win98 at home. Again, I just really can't tell the difference. Don't get me wrong, I know how to find the differences. But they just aren't striking. I am absolutely no expert on the Merced chip and what it will do for us. Speech recognition may be the next killer app...but meanwhile, to me there hasn't been much to rave about lately.

Background 2: A judge way back ruled that intc couldn't trademark a number. Intc came up with name "Pentium". Intc also made a good move in the "Intel Inside" campaign, differentiating themselves from the crowd.

Stupid question: Didn't intc screw up by naming their processors pentium, pentium pro, pentium w/mmx, pentium ii?? Even if they didn't have much new in recent years, wouldn't it have been better marketing to try to have the appearance of something new? Detroit doesn't reinvent every model of car each year, but they do things to make the car appear different and desirable. In marketing, sometimes, image is everything.
