This is a valid point Andrew. However, This could be that because it was only done in a lab or they did not give the details to a reporter because Ampex wants to reveal this to the shareholders at the proper time and place. Maybe! We don't really know. This was an article focusing on the rapid development of higher performance MR heads. So you have to look at the careful wording of the article before you can see below the surface. The article was only written to show how IBM has "demonstrated" the 5-gb per square inch hard drive. This DOES NOT mean that IBM had invented it and PATENTED it. See the TECHNICAL INFORMATION paragraph. There are 3 points that are specifically mentioned that I believe imo are the keys to the question.--Is this KM or is it MEMOREX? 1. WSJ "thin film of ultra-low noise, four-component magnetic alloy that coats the aluminum disk." CORRELATION TO PATENT<"Magnetic record media are described that have an overlying or underlying magnetically saturable high permeability keeper layer in which magnetic signals are stored.">2. WSJ "designed for very high bit density and very low magnetic noise--critcal advantages in reading the tiny bits." CORRELATION TO PATENT<"the word lines can be packed close to one another in the array structure, thereby increasing the amount of information that can be stored in a unit area of the array.">3. WSJ "Another thin coating of a hard material protects the alloy film from contact with the head." CORRELATION TO PATENT<"Each has a magnetic core defining a physical gap and a thin magnetic keeper arranged in close proximity of the core to bridge the gap...forming a signal transducing zone in the keeper.">

I am not an engineer nor an expert in MR technology, and I am by no means an expert in the legal field(esp. patents). However I believe I can pay close attention to details and I enjoy a good suspense story from time to time. For all that, I am convinced that this demonstration has KM written all over it! IMO.

As for your belief that Bramson would't call for IBM to put this in print and not get due credit, I believe that it would do nothing for AMPEX to have this leak out in an article the day before NEW YEARS DAY when not to many people are paying attention to the WSJ. I know I was only getting ready to CELEBRATE the new year as were several others from the LONG LINES at the PARTY STORE!

All this is speculation but it makes for good conversation and its good for the soul. Soon enough there will be an anouncement and all that we have said is mute. In any event I decided to add to my position as did several other INSIDERS from the looks of todays posts. Just glad it went to below 9 so I got it on sale on the last day of the year. I wanted to start the year of right!

Sorry for the LONG post.
