What do you think of stocks with very slow trading activity? Is there any way to profit from these other than with a longer term view?

I've seen days when even MER, BAC, or HD might not have 5000sh trade in a 1/2 hour period. Is it best to avoid these quiet times altogether?

There are other stocks whose daily or weekly charts show nice trending, but the intraday charts suck. No clues given to trading activity for the day trader; just surges every now and then.
