Actually, overwhelming majority over 70-80% want some form of punishment, such as censure or impeachment. The 65% was the old job approval ratings which are now 55%. The fact is the public doesn't know the distinction between an impeachment inquiry, an impeachment hearing, and an impeachment. They still think an inquiry necessarily leads to an impeachment. You seem to be having the same confusion. The Iran-Contra hearings was essentially an impeachment inquiry in which Congress didn't wait for the Independent Prosecutor. The job approval rating is primarily a result of people's perceptions of the economy. Again, there's the misperception on the part of many people that the president manages or runs the economy. Discretionary spending is probably only around 10% of the federal budget. Entitlements which are 68% are pretty much eating up the pie.
