<<I think you're in luck. From what I've read, the meteor shower should occur at 1943 hours Greenwich Mean Time (now called Universal Time) on the 17th. If you are +800, that would mean 0543 on the morning of the 18th.>>

I made a slight error in my timetable. It is actually the afternoon of the 18th that we arrive in Phuket and will be on land until the 19th. However, I know a high hill that passes from the Dusit Laguna area to Patong Beach where there is little interfering night light and I may just take up a post there for that first night.

The following link is the sky from 15 degrees No. latitude for the 15th of November which is the closest I could find a map for. Unfortunately we will be even further south, more like 10 degrees. That puts Leo out of sight, which can be seen almost due north of Cancer in the upper left hand side of the map. But only when you get to 45 degrees North or so. That does not mean we wont see any meteors but your idea of the Gobi would be better. I just don't think it would make for good fishing. <G> You may want to follow the link back a step and find your location sky map. Very cool java app.

Note to Ramsey: I once had a trip to Alaska cancellled due to business. I know the heartache of planning and planning all for naught. Just make a resolve to set another date. Your trip sounds fabulous. I have done the tourista kayaking out of Phuket to several sea caves in the area. Even at that low key it was a fantastic adventure.

Best,
Stitch
