Michael, you seem to be equating liberalism and socialism. The two have very different philosophical roots; indeed, socialism originated as a reaction against liberalism. You are not confusing socialism (state or social ownership of the means of production) with the "welfare state", are you?
And just what "philosophy of the left" do you have in mind??
As for Europe, do you mean Eastern Europe or Western Europe? Eastern Europe, it is true, did suffer, and still suffers, from the effects of socialism. But Western Europe? Seems to be doing very well, on the whole.
As for your remark about liberal radio talk shows, you are only reinforcing the point I was trying to make, which was that you won't find much liberalism ANYWHERE in the media. And if it is indeed true, as you assert, that "most people are not liberal," then one absolutely has to ask what the Borks and the Bennetts are raising such a hullaballo about.
