Part of the problem started as Japanese companies built up capacity for their bubble economy of the late '80s. When the buble burst, so did the markets for their products. As you said, other Asian countries followed the same path -- gain market share at all costs. Just look at what Samsung did to the DRAM market. I think the the effects of all this capacity have not peaked yet. Taiwan seems likely to take a good hit from this.

I think the short squeeze that brought the Hang Seng to 10000+ is nearly completed. It could be heading for an ugly decline.
