Wind River's Tornado and VxWorks Selected for Cisco NetWorks Program

ALAMEDA, Calif., Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Wind River Systems (NASDAQ:WIND)
today announced that Cisco Systems (NASDAQ:CSCO) will make use of
Wind River's Tornado(TM) development environment and VxWorks(R) real-time
operating system as the initial reference platform for the delivery of Cisco
networking technologies under the Cisco NetWorks Program. The Cisco NetWorks
Program is a partnering program designed to accelerate the global availability
of a new generation of low-cost, easy-to-use Internet devices that can
transparently plug into any IP network. Licensees of the program make use of
Cisco's NetWorks technologies, as well as Wind River's field-proven software
tools and operating system to manufacture low cost network enabled products
such as Internet phones and fax machines, cable modems, set-top boxes and
network computers. Financial details were not disclosed.
Introduced in April 1998, the Cisco NetWorks Program extends Cisco's
traditional expertise in standards-based internetworking for large and
medium-sized businesses and service providers to the home and small-office
markets. Initial licensees include Sony Corp., Samsung Corp., Matsushita
Graphics Communications Systems, Inc., and Pace Micro Technology, Plc. Each of
these companies is using Cisco NetWorks technologies integrated with Wind
River's real-time operating system to develop and bring to market
Internet-enabled devices.
"The delivery of Cisco NetWorks technologies, combined with Wind River's
robust software tools and operating system, allows for the rapid development
by Cisco partners of low cost Internet products to support Cisco's customers'
worldwide deployment of new end-to-end network solutions," said
Steve Sneddon, senior director, Global Alliances, Cisco Systems, Inc.
"Consumer device manufacturers, Internet service providers, and consumers will
benefit from the technology collaboration and product oriented solutions made
possible by this alliance."
Successful consumer products demand fast paced design and development. The
integration of networking capabilities, such as IP Telephony services, adds a
new level of complexity to the productization and deployment of consumer
devices. OEMs targeting this category of product place high value on
companies such Cisco Systems and Wind River working together to ensure that
the technologies the OEMs require are highly integrated and interoperable.
"The coming new generation of high-bandwidth consumer products -- like
Sony's new cable modems -- need to be reliable, available and user friendly,"
Kimio Uchida, president, Component Company Business Systems Group, Sony
Electronics. "Wind River's Tornado environment together with Cisco's NetWorks
technologies ensure a fast development cycle and interoperability among
devices thereby accelerating consumer demand for these products."
The integration of Cisco NetWorks software on the Wind River platform also
assures manufacturers that the technologies they incorporate in their products
will be scalable, extensible and allow for product differentiation.
"Wind River software is malleable enough to be used in any number of
different products and our tools make it easy to build unique applications,"
said Curt Schacker, vice president of marketing for Wind River Systems. "We
began actively supporting the vertical approach to embedded product
development with Adobe and postscript printers last year; with FlashPoint and
digital cameras in early 1998; and with our new solution for managed switches
announced last week. Wind River is pleased to continue this trend in the
Internet appliance space as a strategic element in the Cisco NetWorks
program."
