About ATI ...

If James is Wright, then a high power, 4 chip solution
will be no match for NMGC's chip. I'm a firm believer
in battery life as a dominant feature in notebooks.
Then ATI's muscle and pull with OEM's becomes the major
concern.

Let's see what we can dig up:

atitech.com

Rage Mobility
-- 600 mW power consumption (0.6 watt)
-- "single component design" replaces "over six individual chips"
(never says single chip design)
-- pin compatible with Rage LT pro (easy design migration)
-- production in Q1 1999

from the Gateway 5150 announcement:

NMGC 256AV

-- "a single chip that burns less than one watt of power"

==> So, yes to the single chip vs single component design,
but no to the ATI being "high power consumption". This
is, of course, comparing ATI's next generation versus NMGC's
current generation, so the comparison is a little unfair.
However, previously, there was no comparison to be made at
all. That's a point worth noting.
