Covington & Burling Selects ON Command CCM From ON Technology to Dynamically Manage Desktop PCs

  CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 9, 1998--
Extraordinary Success Rate Achieved With the Roll-0ut of 600 New PC Desktops in Under Two Weeks
ON Technology Corporation (NASDAQ:ONTC) today announced that Covington & Burling, one of the nation's largest law firms, has deployed ON Command CCM(TM) (Comprehensive Client Manager), the industry's leading open and scalable enterprise desktop management system, for dynamic control of their 1000+ worldwide PC network. Covington & Burling has leveraged ON Command CCM's pre-operating system technology and native installation approach to rollout over 800 PC desktops, with over 600 of those PCs deployed in less than two weeks. Using ON Command CCM has saved the law firm potentially reduced productivity with the rapid deployment of new PCs and routine software updates.
"I have not seen a more comprehensive product to distribute an entire desktop including the operating system than ON Command CCM on the market today. This product gives you the flexibility to have dynamic control of your network," said Stuart Franklin, information technology manager, Covington & Burling. "I can easily roll out new PCs, service applications and software packages without any loss of user productivity. ON Command CCM gives us a definite technical advantage and has already given Covington & Burling a substantial return on our investment."
Rolling Out New PCs and Software Updates is Fast and Easy
Covington & Burling needed dynamic control of their PC desktops and realized that there was no way to do this solely with the conventional desktop management tools that only send a traditional "snapshot" to each PC for software or operating system distribution. ON Command CCM provides a native installation approach which runs the setup.exe remotely on each PC. The native installation approach allows for custom configurations to be created simply by editing a parameter table, rather than creating a new snapshot image for every installation. This approach also allows network engineers and administrators to take full advantage of plug and play features in software such as Windows 95 so that new operating systems are installed efficiently, just as if the software were installed manually at the desktop.
ON Command CCM has saved Covington & Burling potentially lost productivity by greatly speeding up the process of rolling out new PCs, operating systems and software upgrades. Covington & Burling has used ON Command CCM to roll out over 800 new PC desktops, with 30-35 software applications and Windows 95 on each. Six hundred of these PC desktops were rolled out in just under two weeks. It now takes the IT department only 15 minutes to roll out a new application or upgrade per 30 to 40 PCs. Before using ON Command CCM, the law firm's IT department originally deployed 340 PC desktops using snapshot technology and had to reinstall on many occasions due to the inability of snapshot technology to use plug and play technology to auto-correct for software and hardware faults. Now, with ON Command CCM, Covington & Burling has a 98% software deployment success rate with the remaining 2% attributed to PC hardware failure.
Covington & Burling is now using ON Command CCM for routine software updates. Without ON Command CCM, it would take the IT department 30 minutes to set-up and deploy new software updates to all of its PCs, resulting in over 500 hours of work. Instead, using ON Command CCM requires only 15 minutes of set up for all PCs and updates are automatically deployed according to schedule at the user's next login.
