As we've stated before, it is because Datek has a relationship with the Motley Fool and therefore Amazon, and they decided to not allow shorting of Amazon a while back when AMZN stock reached its peak. As for shortage of shares at other brokerages, it is no doubt to vinik and other insiders grabbing up large blocks of shares for hedging (shorting) purposes. They most likely have a standing order at most major brokerages that "all available shares to short should be given to this list of people as a priority"
