Mike...Well I did read the entire book, but after looking at their choices for potential gorillas I decided that most of them didn't make a lot of sense to me. I guess the market action of most of these confirmed my opinion. I think their approach of buying a basket of potental gorillas isn't applicable to an outsider who has no way of knowing if one of these stocks is falling because the product sucks, or for other market reasons. It's too risky - better to wait a bit. What it proves is that it is very hard to be one of the first ones to identify a future gorilla, but that you can still make money on companies that are either close to or at gorilla status already. They would have been better off to have 2 portfolios- one an expanded "grandfather gorilla" and another "possible potential gorillas". Testing these portfolios separately demonstrates that the authors aren't that good at finding future candidates. Nevertheless the book is quite useful for understanding the competitive advantages of the big cap gorilla's, and this encouraged me to add to my positions near recent market bottoms.
Personally, I can think of only one company that might be a future gorilla and yet is not in the headlines almost every day. That is Citrix Systems and even it is a long shot. Also maybe Rambus but it is expensive and better known. However the book will help me in my search for future gorillas, and I only need to find one or two to make some big profits.
