The option market's fear gauge, the Chicago Board Options Exchange Market Volatility Index, or VIX, was recently up 2.48, or 10%, to 27.10.

Based on a study that I ran a while ago, I found that days that followed a day when VIX moves up by 10% or more are often "wide range days", or days when the market trades in a wide range. The wide range can manifest itself by trending, where the market moves strongly in one direction only, or trading (typical of so-called outside days that put in both a higher high and lower low than the previous day). In any event, be prepared for fireworks.
