( EW)(ORION-PICTURES)(MMG) Orion Pictures Corp., Largo Entertainment Inc. announce distribution, production pact
Entertainment Editors
LOS ANGELES--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Jan. 8, 1997--Orion Pictures Corp., a subsidiary of Metromedia International Group Inc. (ASE:MMG), and Largo Entertainment Inc., jointly Wednesday announced that they have entered into an agreement in which Largo has granted to Orion the domestic distribution rights for all media to two Largo feature films, "City of Industry" and "This World, Then The Fireworks." In addition, the two companies have agreed to co-finance and distribute a third picture, as yet unidentified, which will be produced by Brad Krevoy and Steve Stabler, senior executive vice presidents of Orion Pictures. The announcement was made by Barr Potter, chairman and CEO of Largo, and Len White, president and CEO of Metromedia Entertainment Group and Orion Pictures. "City of Industry" stars Harvey Keitel, Stephen Dorff, Timothy Hutton, Famke Janssen, Wade Dominguez, Michael Jai White and Reno Wilson. The film was directed by John Irvin, written by Ken Solarz, and produced by Evzen Kolar and Solarz. "City of Industry" is a post-modern classic `film noir' set in the criminal subculture of today's Los Angeles. It is a raw, real and uncompromising story of the primeval obsession of a man whose trust had been betrayed and who is on a quest for revenge. "This World, Then The Fireworks," which will be premiered at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival, stars Billy Zane, Gina Gershon, Sheryl Lee, Rue McClanahan and Seymour Cassel. The film was directed by Michael Oblowitz, written by Larry Gross, and produced by Chris Hanley, Brad Wyman and Gross. "This World, Then The Fireworks" is adapted from one of master crime-writer Jim Thompson's most riveting and controversial stories. The movie offers many of the classic elements of crime films -- a love-triangle murder, a night club shooting, a police dragnet closing in on the fugitive hero, tough characters on both sides of the law, bold seduction and fiery love scenes. Potter said, "We are delighted to be working closely with Orion in this new distribution, production agreement. Orion's distribution and marketing expertise will be of great value to Largo as we go forward with these films. I've long admired Brad Krevoy and Steve Stabler as producers, who bring to us outstanding credentials and production know-how which will be invaluable in connection with our third project." Krevoy and Stabler said, "We expect to release `City of Industry' on March 7, 1997, and `This World, Then the Fireworks' later in the year; production on the third Largo/Orion feature is expected to commence the summer of 1997. These films are an important part of Orion's enhanced release slate. All of us look forward to our new association with Largo which we feel will be extremely beneficial for both companies." White said, "We anticipate that our new, important relationship with Largo Entertainment will lead to a sustained flow of production and distribution of several major theatrical films." Orion Pictures is a unit of Metromedia Entertainment Group which provides marketing, distribution and other services for Orion Pictures Corp. and Goldwyn Entertainment Co. Largo Entertainment is a subsidiary of JVC Entertainment Inc., itself a subsidiary of the Victor Company of Japan Ltd.
