After serving four and a half years in prison of a twelve and a half year sentence, Charles Keating has been cleared of all charges involving the failure of Lincoln Savings and Loan Association. Judge Mariana Pfaelzer ruled that his conviction was "unfairly tainted" because several members of the federal jury improperly discussed his earlier conviction on state fraud charges.

Note the somewhat odd source of this one. I guess certain Reaganauts see this as some kind of vindication, or something. No date on this story, a different blurb on his release is dated 10/4/96. An odd factoid from a different story, that I'd heard before but forgotten:


Federal Judge John Davies cited improper jury instructions by Lance Ito, the judge who proceeded over Keating's state trial (and who most people will remember from the O.J. Simpson case) for the decision reversal. Davies claims Judge Ito allowed the jury to convict even though Keating himself did not actually sell worthless bonds from Lincoln Savings & Loan and his bond salesmen did not know the bonds were worthless. In his decision Thursday, Davies wrote "..it has never been a crime to aid and abet an innocent act." (from cnnfn.com
