Wang Laptop Hides from Spies
Wired News Report
12:45 p.m.  9.Nov.98.PST
Wang Global launched a "spy-proof" laptop computer it claims is protected against government observation, blocking a technology that remotely reads onscreen text by tapping into the background radiation emissions.
Tempest, which is not available to consumers, could also withstand the electronics-frying pulse of a nuclear explosion, said the company.
The Tempest product line is for government, security, and military personnel who need equipment that does not leak electronic signals. Those signals can potentially be monitored by spying equipment.
In other respects, Tempest is a standard 15.5-inch laptop computer, available with either Pentium 133, 166, or 200 Mhz processors. The Tempest also includes a removable disk drive and CD-Rom.
Wang (WANG) encased the computer in a thick metal case, adding considerable bulk to the unit. Although it's the size of a laptop, the device weighs 14 and a half pounds. The metal case is built to withstand electromagnetic pulse, or EMP -- the force generated by a nuclear bomb.
Wang also manufactures desktop computers, printers, fax controllers, and color scanners that the company claims cannot be monitored by eavesdropping equipment.
