I think that the best rule to go short is to stick to really crappy issues that have been proved to be dead (ZITL etc).

The market is indeed going mad. It really scared me that DELL will soon command a trailing PE over 90, maybe even 100. And then MSFT, CSCO, maybe even KO! I predict that the S&P 500 will be trading at trailing PE of 50-60 sometime in the next decade.
