The National Post reports in its Tuesday, Nov. 10, edition that an armed band attacked a DiamondWorks mine in Angola on the weekend, killing five employees and taking four others hostage. The National Post's Keith Damsell writes that at approximately 4 a.m. Sunday, 50 armed men staged a hit and run assault on the company's Yetwene mine in northeast Angola. After doing battle with two dozen security personnel, five employees were dead and 18 were wounded. Four workers were taken hostage by the attackers, who are believed to be members of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola, a rebel army based in neighbouring Congo. A DiamondWorks' executive will fly to Angola today to meet with government officials to secure the release of the hostages. Damage to the Yetwene site was minimal and diamond reserves were untouched. The site has been secured by two independent security contractors. DiamondWorks wants to resume work at Yetwene as soon as possible. Over 10 years, the mine is to produce an estimated $360-million (U.S.) in diamonds.
