Ron, injecting politics into economic development goes on all the time. It happens in debating zoning and land use changes, as an example. In our last election this month, our local county voters were asked to approve a "Clean Air Ordinance" because some homeowners in the vicinity of a cement plant being built have been fighting it and have been trying to impose their will on the rest of the county. They lost, but not by much.

The state of South Carolina insisted that the GRNO plant was a major polluter even though their figures were based on a mistake. The diesel distilled from the plant was included in the effluent calculations and it took an entire year to turn them around. That was clearly a political exercise and was just one example of the irrationality that besets American business.
