U.S. Army Qualifies Xylan Switches for Use in Networks Worldwide Business Editors & High-Tech Writers CALABASAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 10, 1998--Xylan Corp. (Nasdaq:XYLN) Tuesday announced that the U.S. Army has qualified Xylan LAN and ATM networking equipment for use in Army facilities worldwide. Xylan successfully completed comprehensive LAN-to-ATM switching performance and interoperability tests conducted by the Army, which expands the company's eligibility to compete for the Army's LAN and ATM networking contracts. The Army tests showed that the OmniSwitch provides a powerful and complete system for both LAN edge and ATM backbone switching requirements, and that it can interoperate with ATM switches and routers from other manufacturers. "With its successful completion of the Army's tests, the OmniSwitch demonstrates world-class switching performance and interoperability," said Brett Michaels, Xylan director of federal sales. "This further demonstrates Xylan's industry leadership in the integration of LANs and ATM for end-to-end networks." U.S. Army Testing In testing conducted by the Army's Technology Integration Center (TIC) at Ft. Huachuca, Ariz., the OmniSwitch passed a series of performance, network reliability, network stability and network recovery tests. The tests simulated the full-speed data traffic generated by 3,000 simulated users spread over 32 workstations, and focused on ATM Forum standards for LAN Emulation and PNNI. Simulated traffic included FTP, TELNET, Web surfing, e-mail and MPEG-1 video streaming. Traffic mixes were varied with different distributions and loading to fully test the Xylan products. These tests are a very important step toward the Army's goal of building a servicewide ATM network that offers each facility, along with the Army's Project Manager for Installation of Networks, the ability to select the equipment best suited for its application. Xylan has demonstrated that it can be a reliable vendor in this infrastructure. The Army Technology Integration Center will be testing Xylan's layer-three switching and Gigabit Ethernet products in the near future. In the ATM test, the combination of Xylan's high-performance 10/100 modules and ATM buffering helped the OmniSwitch to excel at handling the high rates of incoming data. As a result, Xylan is now an approved vendor for the Army's Common User Interface Transport Network (CUITN) project. The company can also sell its products to any Army base that needs networking equipment. About Xylan Xylan is one of the leading switching companies in the world; its products combine LAN switching, ATM switching, layer-three switching and wide area switching over a wide range of interfaces and media. Xylan's switches are distinguished by advanced architectures and chip designs and by any-to-any switching. The same XOS software powers a full range of Xylan switches, from small workgroup Ethernet switches to large multilayer backbone switches. As a result, a Xylan network is able to deliver cohesive services, in both end user and service provider networks. Xylan's Switched Network Services initiative takes switching to the next step: a comprehensive set of services, including DHCP, network address translation, LDAP, RADIUS, DNS, multicast switching and routing, RSVP, broadcast management and policy-based configuration. Many of these services are already shipping. More information about Xylan and its products is available at www.xylan.com.
