EMC Enterprise Storage Integrates With New Oracle8i Database
EMC Develops Storage-Based Backup Management Tools For World's First Database for Internet Computing; Demonstrates Functionality at Oracle OpenWorld
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 10, 1998-- EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC - news) today announced integration of EMC Enterprise Storage solutions with Oracle8i, the industry's first database for Internet computing. In addition to integrating key components of EMC information protection software with the newest database from Oracle Corporation, EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems served as an Oracle8i development platform. Oracle8i's advanced backup functionality is being demonstrated with EMC Enterprise Storage (EMC booth 2018) at Oracle OpenWorld.

EMC, an Oracle Global Alliance Partner, worked with Oracle to design two new Oracle 8i features - Proxy Copy and Database Suspend/Resume - that provide customers with simplified management of decision support system (DSS) tasks leveraging EMC TimeFinder, EMC Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) and EMC Data Manager (EDM).

Proxy Copy, an extension to the Oracle Media Management API, enables the Oracle database management console to manage EDM's high speed, direct disk-to-tape backups and restores. This frees the host processor and network from backup related functions and minimizes the impact on the database. Database Suspend/Resume, combined with SRDF and EMC TimeFinder, facilitates the creation of point-in-time copies of multiple databases, while the production databases remain up and running. With Oracle8i, customers can use these copies to offload and more easily manage tasks such as application testing, backups, data warehouse loading and others that ordinarily impact production database performance and availability.

EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems were used by Oracle in the development of Oracle8i, which simplifies development, deployment and content management for Internet-based applications. Oracle8i builds on the secure, scalable foundation of Oracle8 to reliably manage Internet applications accessed by thousands of users over corporate and public networks.

''Oracle8i perfectly complements EMC's information-centric approach to computing,'' said Jim Pearson, EMC's Vice President of Enterprise Alliances. ''When combined with EMC Enterprise Storage, Oracle8i enables global access to multiple terabytes of information across different computing platforms. Enterprise storage is a critical component in ensuring that this consolidated Internet-based information is properly protected, managed and is always available.''

John Hall, Vice President of Worldwide Alliances at Oracle, said, ''We are excited that EMC has dedicated resources and is working with us to deliver the world's leading technology to our joint customers. EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems will enable Oracle8i users to quickly extend their business across the Internet while confidently being able to secure, scale and manage their data from the desktop to NT and enterprise environments.''

Since 1995, EMC and Oracle have been involved in a number of joint certification and technical projects, including record-size data warehouse projects. In addition, EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems are used by Oracle's Data Server Division and Industry and Front Office Application Division as base development platforms.

EMC Corporation, a Fortune 500 company based in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, is the world's technology and market leader in the rapidly growing market for intelligent enterprise storage systems, software and services. The company's products store, retrieve, manage, protect and share information from all major computing environments, including UNIX, Windows NT and mainframe platforms.
