LSI Logic Storage Systems and Spectra Logic Form Strategic Partnership
to Offer Integrated Backup and Restore
BW - 08:00 a.m. Nov 10, 1998 Eastern

Integrated Tape Backup with MetaStor Network-Attached Storage
Systems Provide Worry-Free Data Protection

MILPITAS, Calif. and BOULDER, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 10, 1998--
LSI Logic Storage Systems Inc., a subsidiary of LSI Logic
Corp. (NYSE:LSI), and Spectra Logic Corp. Tuesday
announced a strategic relationship to provide integrated backup
and restore functionality for LSI Logic's newest-generation
MetaStor network-attached storage products.

The partnership further increases the storage management
capabilities of the MetaStor intelligent storage hub family by
offering backup and restore software and high-performance
robotic tape libraries to provide worry-free data protection for
network administrators.

"The new MetaStor intelligent storage hubs offer today's
system administrators storage solutions with high availability,
excellent performance, capacity and full-featured backup and
restore capabilities," said Nathan Thompson, Spectra Logic's
CEO and chairman.

"The growth of mission-critical data stored on today's networks
has created a need for integrated data protection capabilities at
the peripheral level."

The combined Spectra Logic/MetaStor network-attached storage
solution includes a high performance robotic tape library
allowing users to perform hands-off backups and media
rotations without administrator interaction.

The backup software is responsible for scheduling, tracking
and managing media used for backups and restores. The
Spectra Logic 10000 family of tape libraries is capable of
storing 1 terabyte (TB) (2.6 TB compressed) of near-line
backups for rapid access in the event of a disaster.

Using Sony's new Advanced Intelligent Tape (AIT)
technology, the backup system is capable of creating a backup
image of up to 500 gigabytes (GB) in eight hours
(simultaneously streaming up to four tape drives) without
interruption to users. The software is responsible for all
scheduling, media rotations and tracking through MetaStor's
easy-to-use GUI-based operating environment called JetWorks
Plus.

The combination translates to an integrated, worry-free storage
management solution for network administrators.

"Our partnership with Spectra Logic has been beneficial in
offering a complete backup and restore feature set for our new
intelligent storage hub family," said Bill Reed, managing
director, MetaStor Solutions. "Where backup was once an
oversight in products such as these, it is now becoming a major
differentiator in our current and future network-attached storage
offerings."

The new MetaStor intelligent storage hub family includes
products from the workgroup level up to the data center class
products. The family includes the SH850, with up to 180 GB
for workgroup environments; the SH7000 for department
configurations with more than a terabyte of storage; and the
SH7400 with dual-active I/O paths and automatic failover and
restore for data centers where the highest availability is needed
for multiterabytes of storage.

MetaStor intelligent storage hub products range in price from
$45,000 for the SH850 workgroup system to $350,000 for the
fully configured SH7400 data center system. LSI Logic is
marketing the MetaStor family of intelligent storage hubs
exclusively through VARs, system integrators and international
distributors.

Target applications include CAD/CAM, CASE, data
warehousing, enterprise resource planning, online transaction
processing and imaging. The new MetaStor intelligent storage
hub family also provides transparent data sharing with
multiprotocol support for NFS, SMB/CIFS, NetWare, and
AppleTalk. This facilitates information sharing within groups or
across the enterprise and simplifies management of
heterogeneous networks -- saving the network administrator
time and trouble. All models are available and shipping now.
