Steve Jobs Scores a 'Triple Play' in the UPSIDE Magazine 1998 UPSIDE Elite 100 List....
SAN MATEO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 10, 1998--UPSIDE magazine today announced its highly anticipated 1998 UPSIDE Elite 100, the annual list of the technology industry's influential visionaries, pundits and top executives.
Since 1994, UPSIDE has published its Elite 100 listing of the technology elite, which today has evolved into one of the most sought-after lists of industry insiders.
Topping the UPSIDE Elite 100 Titans category this year is John Chambers, president and CEO of Cisco Systems, who is new to this category. Microsoft founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen, and Masayoshi Sun, president and CEO of Softbank, return to the category, while four new Titans join the ranks: Bernard Ebbers, president and CEO of MCI WorldCom; Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Computer Inc.; Steve Case, chairman and CEO of America Online; and Michael Dell, chairman and CEO of Dell Computer.
One unusual twist in the UPSIDE Elite 100 occurred this year as Steve Jobs, Apple Computer's co-founder and chairman and CEO of Pixar Digital Animation, regained the industry spotlight and was named in three categories: Titans, Hardware and Digital Entertainment. Jobs' Elite 100 "triple play" reduced the actual number of individuals on the list to 98, instead of the usual 100.
"UPSIDE's editors chose the Elite 100 by examining who had the greatest impact on the industry and who helped set the trends, particularly in key areas such as communications, digital entertainment and investments," said Kathleen Doler, UPSIDE executive editor. "The Elite 100 is one of UPSIDE's most widely read annual features, and we know our readers will find this year's list in keeping with UPSIDE's unique view of the technology industry."
A breakdown of this year's UPSIDE Elite 100 shows that nearly half of the people on the list are based in Silicon Valley. However, the overall geographic distribution extends from coast to coast and points in between, including two Mississippi-based executives from MCI WorldCom, Bernard Ebbers, CEO, and John Sidgmore, vice chairman and COO. There are seven women on the 1998 list. This year, a few notable industry heavyweights are absent, namely Oracle's Larry Ellison and George Gilder, senior fellow of the Discovery Institute.
The UPSIDE Elite 100 Internet category boasts all new members this year, including Tim Koogle, president and CEO of Yahoo; James Cramer, founder of TheStreet.com; Sky Dayton, co-founder and chairman of EarthLink Networks; and Sabeer Bhatia, co-founder and general manager of Hotmail Corp.
UPSIDE Editors Select the Elite 100
The 1998 UPSIDE Elite 100 was selected solely by the magazine's editorial board, and for the first time included nominees submitted by UPSIDE and Upside Today readers. In all, UPSIDE compiled 423 nominations in 16 categories. UPSIDE editors reduced the number to 289 individuals, from which the editorial board narrowed the list down to this year's Elite 100.
Five new categories also were added to the list, reflecting momentum in several industry segments. The new Elite 100 categories include Communications Networks, Analyst/Bankers, Investors, Behind the Curtain, and Law and Politics. Some of the favorite categories returning to the Upside Elite 100 this year include Titans, Visionaries, Chips, Software and Hardware.
UPSIDE Holds Elite 100 Online Contest
In advance of today's UPSIDE Elite 100 unveiling, UPSIDE gave readers a sneak peek last week with an online contest (http://Elite100.upside.com/), challenging readers to identify the winners solely by looking at this year's group photograph. To make it easier and more engaging to identify the Elite 100 online, UPSIDE has incorporated Hewlett-Packard's OpenPix ImageIgniter technology into its Web site specifically for the Elite 100 contest. This feature allows users to zoom in on individual faces of the Elite 100 for a closer, more detailed look, offering a better opportunity to identify the winners.
Participants who correctly name each of the UPSIDE Elite 100 during the contest period, which runs through Nov. 15, will have their names entered into a random drawing to be eligible for several grand prizes. All contest winners will be announced Dec. 15.
