Your view of us being an "enlightened" society is interesting given the context of your argument. I think many of us who have lost friends and acquaintances to AIDS have a slightly different view of the "enlightened" status of sexual promiscuity.

Mr. K? I find this post a little misleading. Heterosexual AIDS transmission is dominant in the third world. In the U.S., it was always predominantly gay sex and I.V. drugs. Are there some new statistics I'm unaware of here? Are you hanging around with people I wouldn't expect you to hang around with? Or would you perhaps be engaging in a little fear mongering?

Among 13- to 24-year-olds, 52% of all AIDS cases reported among males in 1997 were among young men who have sex with men (MSM); 10% were among injection drug users (IDUs); and 7% were among young men
infected heterosexually. In 1997, among young women the same age, 49% were infected heterosexually and 13% were IDUs.
cdc.gov

And before jumping on the 49% heterosexual female rate, remember:

The cumulative number of AIDS cases reported to CDC is 641,086. Adult and adolescent AIDS cases total 633,000 with 534,532 cases in males and 98,468 cases in females. (from cdc.gov

Aside from which, the "enlightened" status of sexual promiscuity seems like a rather choice straw man. Anyway, there is such a thing as "safe sex", even if many would prefer we not talk about it so much.

Cheers, Dan.
