RICHARDSON, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 10, 1998--ODS Networks, Inc, (Nasdaq/NMS:ODSI), a leading supplier of secure and high speed networking products, today announced it has been chosen to manufacture and supply HIPPI network interface cards (NIC) to Sun(R) Microsystems, Inc. as a corporate supplier.
Under the terms of the agreement, Essential, an ODS Networks' Company will supply Sun with HIPPI NICs designed specifically for use in all of Sun's Solaris(TM) 2.6 and 2.7 PCI-based platforms. In recent verification tests of the product performed by Sun's evaluation organization, the driver supported bandwidth rates of 73 megabytes of TCP/IP per second. "This HIPPI network interface card is part of Sun's strategy of providing industry leading solutions for our high performance computing customers," stated Jamie Enns, Group Marketing Manager of Sun's Data Center and High Performance Computing Product Group. "We can now offer a cost effective, high bandwidth HIPPI connection to our customers' legacy HPC systems."
The PCI HIPPI NIC supports traffic with full-duplex connections over TCP/IP. In order to maintain performance in data-intensive applications, the NIC has an internal CPU that manages interrupt coalescence for host CPU offload, two independent DMA channels, a custom ASIC, and local configuration registers for easy install. It is designed to provide 100 megabytes per second bandwidth with drivers for TCP/IP block mode operation between workstations and servers. "Essential/ODS Networks is proud to be a product supplier to Sun Microsystems. This agreement bolsters Essential's position as a market leader in high performance networking," said Dr. John Gibbon, V.P Engineering for Essential/ODS Networks.
