"Was told not to expect any cable internet access in 1999. Situated approximately 40,000 ft from my LEC's CO, I won't see ADSL for awhile, not even G.lite. So it looks like its me & my ISDN for at least another year(more likely year & half). Hard to believe how slow (or far) the last mile journey is, especially smack in the middle of LA in a rather high income area (Bel-Air). OK, so much for the venting."
LML, Kind of ironic, but you hit the nail on the head as to why the "rollouts" are going so slow. You are paying premium prices for ISDN. xDSL will only hurt existing infrastructure revenue streams and also increase capital spending for the LECs. Lots of individuals, who can't afford ISDN are ordering second phone lines. More icing on the cake for LECs who aren't too motivated to do much in the bandwidth arena. That whole Telecom Act sure didn't work out too well. But at least everyone knows it now.
As far as an HFC(coax) solution, that takes money. That is the biggest holdup to the MSOs(cable companies) rolling out services. So that is why I got pretty excited when AT&T announced their TCI deal. I know more are to come soon. Remember Bill Gates and Paul Allen have billions invested in the HFC solution. PS Currently, my cable modem service is about as reliable as AOL was when they went to unlimited service plan. In other words, it stinks! Sometimes, I can boot up my laptop, dial in on my analog line and beat my cable modem, hooked up to my desktop, in retrieving E-mail. |
