I saw some comments on the Yahoo thread that Compaq is starting to sel direct. However, I saw on CNBC a discussion of this. I missed the first part of the discussion, but it appears that CPQ is going to start to go direct ala Dell but also continue to sell through the retailers. In fact, they are planning to recompense the retailers somewhat, although I have no idea what this entails. Anyway, the bottom line is that they are still selling through CPU, or at least thats what I got out of it. Comments from others more knowledgable than I welcome.
