It's why I totally gave up on sports a few years ago. The players of all sports used to feel fortunate just to make a living doing something they loved. It's no longer sports - it's pure business. I grew up with baseball and it was an escape from the business of life for both the young and old. The spirituality of sports has been buried by salaries, marketing and advertising deals with players and naming stadiums after corporations which pay for it (rather than commemorating teams or individual legends). Attendance of games used to be very American, very democratic - read: affordable to those of even low means. A survey indicated that it now costs over $200 to take a family of four to a pro football, basketball or hockey game and about $120 for a baseball game. Even though I did peek at this year's home run derby, for the most part the soul of sports has been excised.
