The cool stuff in 8i has incredible potential.

When you combine transportable tablespaces with the JVM support it means an app vendor could ship their product written entirely in Java/SQL with preconfigured, mountable tablespaces. You could snap an app into an existing database. The app vendor could ship pre-loaded configurations for small, medium, large shops, or for specific vertical industries with all the data already in the tablespaces set to go.

Content vendors can ship their wares preconfigured in tablespaces combined with browser enabled apps. For example, you could buy Polk data and install it in an existing database by snapping the tablespace(s) into place and installed the Java forms in minutes.

This really simplifies the job these app and content vendors have to do in preparing their products for sale, and best of all, really locks them into working with the biggest database vendor, ORCL. The vendor knows when they do this it will run on any HW vendor with any browser. So it commits them to ORCL. Given it opens up the rest of the world to them, wide area network enabling their product in a flash, it isn't such a big price to pay to be ORCL centric.

Imagine being able to integrate 50 years of Dow Jones information into an existing stock trading website by snapping the data and forms into place...
