I'm sorry. I disagree completely. When we make things illegal, those who still practice the outlawed acts by definition do that covertly. Then we try to arrest them. This method has the benefit of clearly identifying miscreants from time to time, while discouraging the mass of those who might have formerly had their ethics challenged.

That's how laws work, and they do work. Especially if you put some real teeth into the punishments.

I'm real tired of repub excuses on these bribes. too. At least the demos know better than to represent this point of view openly. What are the republicans afraid of? Basically, they know that with their current platform, they couldn't get elected dogcatcher without huge money being spent on media. That subverts democracy. What they should do is find better issues, or become a permanent minority party representing their unpopular views. Those are the ethical possibilities.
