Well, yes and no. From what I understand there are two or more formats, in which the data is stored on the disk. That in turn may cause a problem for John Q Public. It would be similar to putting a Mac 3.5 disk in an IBM compatible system and not be able to read the disk. I know that there were a few systems out there that boasted about having the capability to read/write in both formats (IBM/Mac), but there were some problems from time to time. And, I haven't heard much about them in a long time. On the positive side, someone had mentioned that it didn't really matter for us, with regards to royalties, because they all use ECDs phase-change technology. The problem, as I understand it, is that we could have a similar scenario to the VHS vs. Beta war, causing the public to hold off on purchasing the new technology. I am inclined to believe that the Sony/Phillips format will lose again! I could be wrong, this could be their lucky disc. They do offer more disk storage currently, but bigger is not always better. From what I heard Panasonic beat them in marketing. I was hoping to make it to COMDEX again this year and find out more about formats, pricing and availability, but that may not happen.
The radio ad about the EV1 is new to me. We have one of those wonderful drivers. Maybe Don can interject something. Was the ad on a local station? Did you hear it on the way to work and have you heard it more than once? |
