You still missed the point about the "contributions" of time, advertising, paying people to drive them to vote or paying them not to, low-rent or no-rent space, newspapers backing politicians, etc. The unions and other PACs run issue ads in specific markets to counter specific candidates. All of these tactics as well as cash have a value to the parties that benefit from them. Value is more important than cash. Time and resources are often provided to politicians by these groups without the approval of members of groups.

Cutting the direct contributions to candidates just shifts the money into indirect campaign mechanisms, such as GOPAC.
