Dipy, although I am a Democrat myself, I don't think it is fair to say that "the far right...doesn't have any common ground with the Democratic Party", especially when we are talking the "far right" in the South.
Sure, the Solid South is no longer solid, but there are still "rightists" down there who continue to vote Democratic, for "historical reasons", as you put it.
Besides, what is a "rightist", anyway? The Christian Coalition, for example, is usually considered "right-wing". But I read someplace that about 30% of Christian Coalition members voted Democratic this year. (Don't know how those figures were obtained, or how accurate they were.)
And where interracial marriage is concerned, don't forget that some blacks oppose it, too, for reasons of their own. (Which does not mean they would support a constitutional ban on it, of course.)
