Motorola Inc Q4 results show signs of recovery

By Susan Nadeau

CHICAGO, Jan 9 (Reuter) - Motorola Inc gave analysts hope that a turnaround is on the way for the technology giant by reporting what appear to be better-than-expected fourth quarter results and a rebound in orders in its key businesses.

"It looks like they certainly seem to be on the ramp to recovery," said Rakesh Sood, an analyst for Hambrecht & Quist.

Motorola Thursday posted fourth quarter net earnings of $0.39 a share versus $0.72 a share last year. The results included more than $150 million in restructuring costs and "other unusual charges."

POSSIBLE LOST DATA "These results were really better than expected," said Douglas Christopher, an analyst for Crowell, Weedon & Co. "No one thought sales would be that good."

Motorola's semiconductor sales, which in 1995 accounted for some 29 percent of the company's overall revenues, fell from 1995's fourth quarter. The industry has been hit with over-capacity and has only recently begun to pick up.

But analysts said new orders were up 24 percent in the fourth quarter 1996 compared with the third, which was key.

"That's bigger than I thought," Eraiba said. "I had thought (there was) only a little bounce."
