My answer - keep promoting Linux. Keep suing them. Wear them down. Invent new paradigms like Java. Wear them down some more. Foster enemies for them wherever possible, so that no number of unethical lawyers of PR people will stop the tide.

We did it to IBM, and today they are usually pretty tame, and give their customers better value. It can be done to MSFT. However, it is very important to keep ones own reputation clean and free of the reputation for manipulation - something Netscape and Sun had better watch out for.

For individual programmers - whenever possible give away software, especially if it has system function or office function. Cut the financial foundation away from all of these standard-breaking, user manipulating pigs, at whatever company. Try to promote the idea of the reliability and sensibility of free software with whomever you speak to. When we eliminate all the phony me-too products that just reiterate what has been done for twenty years, what we will be working on is innovative products, not feature bags or API traps or phoney proprietary technology. And what we work on we will have much more control over.
