RE: Blackboard and eraser

What Einstein really needed his scientific biographers say was an advanced mathematical education. One of the most interesting things about him, was his unmatched physics intuition and his inadequate mathematical sophistication. I think he would have zoomed with Mathematica on a decent desktop. Oddly enough, one of his assistants at the Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton (where -- as only a guest I assure you -- I met him briefly) was John Kemeny, later president of Dartmouth and author of BASIC. Another colleaque was John von Neumann who was one of the inventors of the modern computer and a great practical mathematician. I have no question that the combination of great human thinkers and superb computational equipment raises the combined competence exponentially above the achievements of either. I even think that the computer is useful for people who lack the physicial or mental ability to perform even simple mathematical, language, and physical tasks. Cyborgs we may become. Einstein would have been a truly outstanding Cyborg.
