Is your account with Schwab ? I was commenting on what I had found Schwab's POLICIES to be, not on what the IRS (and almost certainly at least some other brokerage firms) will permit. By the way, Schwab does permit selling of covered PUTS, but apparently that is all in an IRA and non-margin account. If anyone can confirm SCHWAB actions otherwise, please let me know, but I have tried twice, different accounts, different offices, different brokers.
