"So, whereas at one time we had a protective society in place for children that generally was stable through puberty, we now have a preparatory society that hands active social grenades over to children to play with."

Very thoughtful post, Abdul Haq. It is WAY past my bedtime, and I would like to comment on it some other time.

For the moment, just want to express my 100% agreement with your above-cited observation.

It was so EASY to grow up when I was a teenager. There were practically NO temptations around. I did have a brother who occasionally used to put a little whisky in a cough medicine bottle, and sneak it into class, just to see whether he could do it. Wow! And that was about it. We had never even heard of drugs. There was no "teen culture", no television, no pressure even to have sex...And I went to a "progressive" school!

Now these kids have "active social grenades" thrust into their hands when they are barely out of diapers. That is the reality. How does one deal with it? It is a real poser.
