Network App Caches In On Intranets
Network Appliance Inc. is targeting smaller ISPs and the emerging enterprise market with a series of caching appliances that promise higher performance and lower costs.
The NetCache C700 series, which began shipping this week, will be powered by a 600-MHz Alpha chip, providing performance levels up to twice as much as NetApp's current 600 series, according to Amit Pandey, director of the NetCache product line.
Caching, according to Collaborative Research Inc., is projected to grow into a $4 billion market by 2002, with enterprise purchases of caching products eclipsing the ISP market in 1999.
To that end, NetApp is introducing NetCache model C720S, aimed specifically at enterprise deployments, Pandey said. The device, priced at below $20,000, features LDAP support, intranet integration and beefed up security and management through version 3.3 of the NetCache software. By Chuck Moozakis
